Peridot, the August Birthstone
August is golden: the last long weeks of summer, slow afternoons by the water and evenings that glow until late. Its birthstone is just as luminous. Peridot is a bright, fresh green with a hint of gold, a color that seems to hold the late summer light inside it.
Our August birthstone jewelry brings that lime-green glow to waterproof gold, from colorful signet rings to dainty drop earrings and personalized birthstone pieces, made to come with you on every summer adventure and long after.
The Story of Peridot
Peridot is one of the few gems that forms deep inside the earth, in molten rock, and reaches the surface through volcanoes. It has even been found in meteorites that fell from space. The ancient Egyptians called it the gem of the sun and mined it on a small island in the Red Sea, where it was said to glow so brightly that it could be found at night. Some historians believe that many of the emeralds worn by Cleopatra were in fact peridots.
Its sunny green made it a natural birthstone for August, a month of warmth, light and abundance. It remains a favorite for anyone who loves bright, happy colors.
What Peridot Symbolizes
Peridot has always been the stone of light and positivity. It was believed to chase away darkness and bad dreams, and to bring good luck, joy and peaceful sleep. In many traditions it was also seen as a stone of friendship and of letting go of the past to welcome something new.
Wearing your August birthstone is a way to carry a little sunshine with you: a reminder to stay optimistic, open and warm. For someone born in August, it is a cheerful celebration of the very best of summer.
The Color of August
The August birthstone is a vivid, yellow-green, somewhere between lime and olive. On warm gold it looks fresh and playful, and it brightens up any outfit, from a white linen dress to a simple t-shirt. It is a color that feels effortlessly summery, even in the middle of winter.
How to Wear Your August Birthstone
A green signet or cocktail ring is a fun way to wear August, alone or stacked with gold bands. Small peridot-green drops and huggies bring a pop of color to the face, and a birthstone necklace or bracelet keeps it delicate. Green pairs beautifully with pearls, gold coins and other warm stones, so it is easy to layer with the rest of your jewelry box.
